In 1981, Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn first met Depeche Mode in London when he shot them for an NME cover; in the foreground the smirking, blurred singer Dave Gahan, the rest of the band standing behind him smiling in sharp focus. According to Corbijn, the band were, at the time, “too poppy” for his taste. Fast forward five years and Depeche Mode were transforming their sound and look, with Corbijn now serving as the band’s creative director. Since 1986, he has crafted all of their visuals including photography, videos, and set designs.

Anton Corbijn/Depeche Mode is a detailed illustrated history of how Corbijn’s timeless visual aesthetics have cemented the band’s reputation as New Wave pioneers, whose synthesized music and dark lyrics sound as cutting edge today as in the 1980s. Some 350 photographs from Corbijn’s extensive archives, many of which never seen before, come together with sketches and designs for stage sets and album covers to visually amplify the impact of Depeche Mode’s “fourth member.”

Created with the band’s full collaboration, Anton Corbijn/Depeche Mode trumpets how one man’s original and unforgettable visuals helped shape the band’s enduring popularity.
